I bought Radiohead’s new album “In Rainbows”. The album was made available from their website last week and no price was specified (everyone pays as much as he/she wants). Quite nice, I have to say. And it seems to have become really popular among internet users: the album has occupied all the top-10 positions of LastFM’s chart for this week.

I preferred Hail To The Thief, but it is an absorbing listen. I find it best to listen to just before you nod off - and I don’t mean that in a bad way. The abstractness helps with the imagery in that half dozed state and also helps to lull you.
Sure, it’s not full of hooks and melodies, but we need some bands to not do that.

I wonder if the free pricing initiative was just a marketing trick or the beginning of a sincere, long-term swift in the record industry.

Do you believe that its popularity should be attributed to its quality, or to its genuine selling method?

Notice that the creation of this album happened after Radiohead ended their cooperation with their former record company (EMI). So I think that the free pricing initiative belongs to Radiohead, who had already become rich and famous enough to experiment with the distribution of their work. However, it can spark a long-term swift in the record industry, if more well known artists swift towards this direction and/or the record companies seek new ways to offer their sales.

Regarding the popularity of the album, I think it is owed first to the selling method together with the fact that Radiohead had already become very popular. And secondly to the album’s quality - which, by the way, has some fairly good moments.
